Webshop Meiji Shawl Collar Boro Jacket

Meiji Shawl Collar Boro Jacket

$3,400.00
sold out

A lightweight, fully lined boro jacket featuring two antique furoshiki and strictly hand-sewn sashiko.

The outer jacket shell utilizes a late Meiji era (1860s-1880s) antique handwoven furoshiki with both kakishibuzome (persimmon) and Aozome (indigo) dyes, utilizing tsutsugaki resistance dye techniques for a radial family crest design. The unique lining also utilizes an antique furoshiki circa the Taisho/Showa-era. This unique fabric showcases indigo-printed comic panels, the graphics of which appeared in Jiji Manga, a comic supplement first appearing in the Sunday edition of Jiji shimpo in 1902.

The hand-drafted pattern took inspiration from my favorite 19th and 20th century tailoring details, including a waist buckle as seen in late 1800s Type I jackets, a high shawl collar as popularized by 1940s USN coats, and a variety of pocket styles: patch pockets as seen in 1930s chore coats as well as yoke-inset pockets seen on a mid-century shirt-jacket.

Features distressing and hand-sewn sashiko stitching throughout. The sashiko thread was first antiqued by hand to color match the age of the textiles used. A variety of sashiko styles were employed, including the classic directed running stitch, a cross-hatch effect composed of perpendicular stitch lines, and a hand applique-style whipstitch.

Features:
Shawl collar
Adaptable pleating for ease of movement
Two front yoke chest pockets
Two inner patch pockets
Lumbar buckle for waist adjustment
Fully lined
Lightweight cotton allows the jacket to serve as outerwear on cool spring evenings or a mid layer throughout the cooler months

Materials:
Body - 100% antique Japanese cotton
Buttons - 100% natural horn
Hardware - Antique Brass

Sizing:
Letter Size - M (oversized) or L (classic fit)
